The next return to a previous era is very likely to be Medieval 3 as there is more interest in returning to the middle ages than any other previously-explored era, and after all, Medieval 2 preceded Empire and is in greater need of a new title. My guess is China, though obviously we have to wait and find out. The next historical title we know covers a new era. Well, I believe that Empire 2 may actually be a very, very long way off. This is why I think it needs something along the lines of a definitive edition upgrade.įirst I want to address the most obvious question: "Why not wait for Empire 2?". Now, Empire would ideally need a great deal of work both visually and under the hood Rome 2's Power & Politics update isn't really comparable, and while a new campaign wouldn't be unwelcome, it doesn't feel wholly necessary. Many players are clearly interested in the era as evidenced by the fact that it retains the 5th spot in the series on steamcharts, right above Attila, and it seems a shame not to tap its popularity and help raise Empire above its most egregious faults. It was the first game on the Warscape engine, and there were bound to be issues, especially considering the grand scope of the game CA set out to create, but it still seems a shame to leave it in its current state. ![]() With the news that CA have decided to give us yet another DLC and content update, further improving the game, I think it can now be said, almost inarguably, that Empire: Total War is the single weakest title in the Total War series in terms of reaching its full potential, and could have used much more attention in order to create the completely polished experience fans deserved. A year later, we get the Emperor Edition delivering to us a pretty solid and well-polished title, if still a little underdeveloped in certain areas. Rome 2, as we all know, had a pretty shoddy release.
